The Amsterdam Airport

Sculpture at Schiphol Airport by Meri Williams 07-16-06Meri Williams comments on how much she loves Amsterdam:

This trip, she was only able to stop off at Schiphol Airport, but even a simple layover at the airport was enjoyable. Enjoy her photos here: Meri Williams’ Bucharest Trip.

Amsterdam was one of those cities that was only mentioned in passing when people talked about legalizing marijuana. Every since the city sponsered Bloggers in Amsterdam, it seems that it has much more to offer than hash without prison.

Questions for Vacations

Filed under: Travel — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Friday Five is a group of journal prompts that you can use every week to write about things in your life. Back on June 9th, they asked about vacations.

I love some of the answers people gave:

“I want to visit Thailand and just be free to explore the country on my own. It’s a little bit cliche but it’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.”

“I want to do this huge road trip. Every state in the US (excluding Hawaii & Alaska).”

“My dream vacation: to work my way from New York to San Francisco, taking 6 months to do it and stopping off in loads of different places.”

I tend to go to the same places over and over without thinking about other places to go. I go to Billings, Montana to visit my grandpa. I go to San Diego and San Francisco to visit my friends and I go to Vegas for a quick getaway.

These questions from Friday Five have really gotten me thinking about different things.

  • What is (or would be) your dream vacation?
  • What’s one thing no vacation can do without?
  • What has been the best trip of your life so far?
  • Who was with you on that trip and what is the role of that person in your life?
  • What’s the worst thing that can happen during a vacation?

How would you answer these questions?

Mighty Girl Goes to Amsterdam

Filed under: Travel — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Maggie Mason has been traveling the world. While relaxing at the cafes of Amsterdam, she took a few moments to record her experiences. You can see her travels here:

“Bryan left me at a cafe while he went to make photocopies. I didn’t have a book with me, so I took photos of all the bikers who passed.”

“In Amsterdam, all of your hot drinks come with cookies! Delicious.”

If you’re feeling trapped at work while you cover for your coworkers, take a few moments and enjoy Maggie’s vacation pictures. They will make you feel like you traveled the world over without leaving your desk.

Where the Hell is Matt?

Filed under: Travel — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

He had a simple plan. He was going to program and play video games for the rest of his life. Then something snapped and he started his world travels on the money he had saved. This video shows all the places he has been.

You can read Matt’s journal and enjoy a first hand view of his travels:

I love the entry from Singapore:

Transit.

And for as long as I remain this way, I’m okay. When I stop moving, that’s when problems catch up.

But this isn’t right, is it? Surely this is not the way it should be. Airports are soulless, antiseptic. Why am I at peace here? Why am I only happy when I’m going somewhere?

I don’t know. I suppose, looking at myself from afar, the question itself is fairly obvious.

What is this guy’s deal?

But it’s only just occurred to me. It took 49 flights in twice as many days for me to notice. This is abnormal. Abnormal, maybe, in a bad way.

Sometimes travel is an escape from the mundane and sometimes its an escape from other things. The one thing you can’t run away from, however, is yourself. Enjoy Matt’s travels from the beginning and feel yourself transported to a different world.

Airlines Redesign Their Websites, But Not Their Business Flaws

Filed under: Travel — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

The major airlines have been redesigning their websites to make things easier for customers to purchase their tickets without face-time with airline employees.

The airlines have bragged that,

“Technologically, airline Web sites are as complicated a retail site as you’re ever going to see.”

Jeffery Veen quipped back,

“Airline web sites are complex and confusing because the way airlines do business is complex and confusing.”

Airlines have been using variable pricing structures for years, but the fact that we have access to all their pricing information now makes that obvious. If the airlines want to compete in the information age, they are going to have to redesign more than just their websites.

Jeremy Zawodny’s First Solo Cross-Country Flight

Filed under: Travel — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

Jeremy Zawodny: South of San Jose and Anderson Lake

In order to complete his private pilot certificate, Jeremy Zawodny had to complete a solo cross-country flight. He did recently and included photos and insights here:

He tells us in detail what it’s like to fly alone over the North American continent:

“Then, before I knew it, I was coming up on the higher terrain east of the Salinas Valley. The hills between me and King City weren’t terribly intimidating, but it still makes you think about where you’d land if the engine quit.”

Next time you’re feeling like leaving everything and escaping, remember that a vacation is just a click away here at Starling Travel. We’ll take you away without taking you away.

Fleming Beach – Maui, Hawaii

Steve and Carol Garfield went to Maui and enjoyed a day at Fleming Beach.

Click here to go to Steve Garfield's Vlog

They took the rental car further north than the maps said existed and found a beach.

“Snorkeling is a big attraction in Hawaii and we found a spot where the boats come and take all the people.”

Strangely, I thought Carol said, “Smuggling is a big attraction in Hawaii.” The video was looking to be a lot more exciting than I expected. Instead, they were talking about watching fish underwater.

Directions: Keep going along Honoapiilani Highway. The road goes further than the map indicates. The beach is just past the Ritz Carlton.

Mighty Girl Visits the Blue Lagoon

Filed under: Travel — Laura Moncur @ 5:00 am

The Blue Lagoon by Maggie MasonTraveling to Iceland was never something on my list of things to do, but after hearing Maggie Mason’s description of the blue lagoon in Iceland, it sounds like something I might enjoy.

“The salty water makes it easy to float on your back and feel the cool air on your face. It’s so relaxing that you have the urge to drool.”

The foggy mist rising from the water is enticing to me. After reading later posts, she strongly recommends wearing a bathing cap to prevent the water from damaging your hair.
